Thank you Michael for your many contributions to FallCon!
Paul Hills
Introduction
He's the man with the plan! And the revised plan. And the backup plan. And the ideas for next year's plan ... and ... well ... we depend on Paul for a LOT of plans!
He's the master of FallCon's floorplan, logistics and the organizer of all the amazing behind-the-scenes setups that we can so easily overlook - because he makes it look so incredibly seamless and effortless. Trust us when we tell you - it's NOT...and this event would never have the amazing flow it has without the skill and unwavering support of Paul!
Here's a little about his story in his own words:
"I was introduced to Fallcon in about 2013 when my wife suggested that we attend. We had enjoyed board games as a couple with two young children (7 and 9) and had heard that it was a family friendly place to play board games for the weekend. I was amazed how quickly our kids found other children to game with at the event, thus allowing my wife and I to get in a game or two of our own that weekend.
I started volunteering as an "unofficial" volunteer that helped stack tables and chairs when the event was over. I continued in that capacity for a couple of years, buying the weekend badge and then helping pack up on Sunday afternoon. By helping pack up I was able to begin to connect with the other volunteers and my wife and I decided to begin volunteering throughout the event. I started out volunteering with setup, registration, the help/info desk, and teardown. In subsequent years I also volunteered at the library and as a game host. Last year I was the Logistics Champion, responsible for planning the event floor layout, securing all the physical items we rent in order to run the event, and planning the setup and tear down of the event. Thankfully we have great volunteers that have stepped up to assist with the abundance of physical labour needed to make the weekend run smoothly."
Favorite Thing About FallCon
"Undoubtedly ... the people. I love the many volunteers that I work with and am thrilled that I can help create an atmosphere where so many people can gather together and enjoy gaming with each other."
Favorite Game
From Paul's view: "That is an unfair question"! We hear you Paul - who can choose?!? Paul loves playing games that he has not had an opportunity to play before. In 2019 he played about 70 different games, but only 9 of them made it to the table more than twice that year. Of those that he played more than twice, his two favorites are Brass Birmingham and Terraforming Mars.
Vertical or Horizontal?
Paul claims that this question is "easy". We TOLD you he was a man with a plan!
"If money were no object, each game would be stored in its own HORIZONTAL cubby that can be easily accessed independent of all other games on the shelf. However, that is NOT the reality that I live, thus I store my games primarily vertically, with a few games (mostly the very small boxes and any old style thin rectangular boxes) stored horizontally."
Memorable Gaming Experience
"For many of the years that I have been at Fallcon, they have hosted a large game of "Circus Maximus". This is a game where each person is playing a chariot in a roman chariot race. The objective is to win the race while regulating speed on the straight and corners, dodging attacks from other players, attacking others and keeping your chariot together.
In the final lap of the race my chariot was in excellent position to win the race, and as I came around the final corner, about to win... I don't recall exactly what happened... but either my chariot wheel came off, or the chariot flipped. In either case, in the game, the horses continued to pull me, dragging by the reigns, through the rest of the corner. I had to roll for damage and survived three of the four rolls, only to find myself unsuccessful in the final roll. Thus, alas, it was decided that either I had let go of the reigns or died from being bumped along the ground, but in either case, I had lost the race. But what a thrilling way to lose."
Thank You!
Thank you for all your contributions and your continued dedication to the FallCon Organizer Team Paul. We can't imagine this event without your keen eye for detail and your ever-present welcoming demeanour at the event.
Can't wait to see your next big PLAN for FallCon 34!
Shaun Pearson
Introduction
Quick Note: We couldn't find a photo of Shaun at FallCon that was in focus and illustrated him fully in his element (evidently you can't sit still Shaun!). But this shot of him by the Millennium Falcon was too epic to pass up. And we have a strong suspicion that you could rope him in to a game of Star Wars Rebellion in a heartbeat - so we're pleased that the premise of gaming-related snapshots is maintained in this photo! Right?!
Now on to the details of FallCon Shaun! Shaun first attended FallCon 5 years ago. He quickly stepped up to volunteer and just 2 years after he first attended, he was hosting games and helping coordinate social media for FallCon!
